Deadmau5: Meowingtons Hax 2K11 - Live From Toronto DVD Review

By Sarah Myers

This past November, thousands of fans packed Toronto’s Rogers Centre to watch Canadian house music producer Joel Zimmerman (better known as deadmau5) play a lengthy set that was epic to say the least. The first Canadian artist to ever play the Rogers Centre, it makes perfect sense to pull out all the stops to ensure an amazing performance.

Rocking a new golden head with Swiss cheese holes, deadmau5 wastes no time getting the crowd moving with his original mix of “Where my Keys”. Among other hits were “Some Chords” mashed with Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”, “Raise Your Weapon (Noisia Remix)” and “Animal Rights”. Sofia Toufa was also in attendance to perform her two collaborative songs “Sofi Needs a Ladder” and “One Trick Pony” though whether she actually sang this live is questionable.

Let’s face it, watching DJs isn’t exactly the most exhilarating experience but this video allows the viewer to get behind the DJ booth and watch his technique. A bird’s eye view offers front row seats to his infamous light show with The Cube in full effect. The camera pan across the vast sea of people all donning glow in the dark mouse ears fails to capture the enormity of the venue. deadmau5’s set was packed with heart stopping bass which can only be appreciated if you’ve got the right equipment – watching this on a TV from the late 90s just isn’t going to cut it.

The plus side to not getting the full experience from the DVD is that by the end you’ll be dying to see the real thing and we both know you will not be disappointed.
