DVAS - Society CD Review

Upper Class Recordings / EMI

By Mike Bax

Society is another album of interesting electronic music from the Toronto area. Blending elements of eighties music with a sound akin to Daft Punk, DVAS will surely be the band on the tip of everyone’s tongues this summer.

With attention already steered towards DVAS on AUX-TV and Much Music, along with some solid internet buzz around lead single ‘Society’, it doesn’t take any sage-like qualities to suggest that the DVAS are in for a buzz-heavy summer worldwide. Considering the material on Society consists of a warm mix of electronica blended in with smooth vocals and even a touch of disco, I’d anticipate hearing DVAS in sweaty dance clubs at the wee hours of the morning, but also in lounges and chi chi clothing stores during the waking hours.

DVAS reminds me of bands like Groove Armada, and Cassius, even AIR in places, which suggests to me the band should do quite well in Europe. ‘Watching You’, ‘Ambient Room’ and ‘Giving It All Away’ are all interesting songs on the eleven-song Society, but I’m really just selecting three movements from an overall album that is an easy listen from beginning to end.

I’m curious to see how Society will translate on a stage performed live. The material could easily go the way of a DJ set – where you’ll be in a crowd watching three bodies on a stage shaking their hips and punching the knobs on their electronic equipment. DVAS could be a band akin to Justice and Crystal Castles, however, with the ability to deliver a unique live experience fans will talk about for months after seeing their performance. I’m hoping for this latter option.

DVAS are great live... keyboards, bass guitar and drums.... (with backing tracks off a computer)... but there is no knob twiddling in sight. also the singer jered has terrific stage presence and charisma
