Kilmore Place - What Happened album review

Indie

Vancouver- born Kilmore Place has released their second EP entitled What Happened. After opening for a couple of mainstream bands such as Finger 11 and Hedley, Kilmore Place is gaining popularity and starting to venture outside of  British Columbia by embarking on their own cross Canada tour.

What Happened is a six-track (plus one bonus song) album full of emotion. The usual themes of love and death, and all subgenres that go along with these, can be found in their lyrics and instrumentals. Feelings of hopelessness are repeated throughout multiple songs. While repetition is not always a negative thing, Kilmore Place could use a bit more variety. There is only so much heartbreak and regret one can listen to.

Although, the tracks do provide the listener with some variety, from a bit of electric energy and an upbeat feeling to the perception of ill fate paired with lethargy. This juxtaposition can leave you with that gloomy raining day feeling, which may not necessarily be a bad thing. Music should conjure up some of those negative emotions; we can’t all be dancing on rainbows and hugging puppies 24/7. Leave that for your days off.

The band does do a good job of layering instruments, even though the only difference from a regular indie rock band and Kilmore Place is the piano/keyboard player. They have shown potential through their ability to blend the instruments in a slightly more interesting way, which can keep the listener absorbed.

Unfortunately Ryan Bacchus' vocals leave something to be desired. While the band did attempt a harmony in a song, the lead singer’s vocals are the focal point. But only few times does he use what sounds like the full range of his voice, thus allowing the vocals on the EP to fall short.

This being only the second release, Kilmore Place has yet to show us what they are capable of, but once they do they will be able to set themselves apart from all of the other indie rock bands out there.
