Metric played a 45 minute free concert on a stage erected in between Union Station and Front Street West last night at shortly after 7:00pm.

The band were brought into town for this special concert on Samsung's dime - as an assist to bring attention to their new Galaxy S smartphone. When a Samsung spokesman took the stage five minutes before Metric, and said "Welcome to the worst kept secret in Toronto" in regards to the much rumoured Metric 'secret' appearance, he drew a good chuckle from the crowd in waiting. After a short preamble on the Galaxy S and it's many features, Metric took the Samsung emblazoned stage and delivered a tight set of music to what had to be about 5000 people.

Call it what you will - a marketing ploy; an effort to revitalize the Toronto core as an event-friendly locale, or just a free live show from one of Canada's finest rock bands - the performance was awesome. Fantasies is easily Metric's finest hour, and getting to see the band perform the majority of it as a free show last night was pretty damn awesome. Interspersing the lyrics to 'Fight For Your Right (To Party)' by the Beastie's during their live set was lots of fun.

This will likely be Metric wrapping up their tour cycle for Fantasies, a bonafide independent release success story if there ever was one. Fantasies has sold a pant-load of copies worldwide. The band has toured the album to stadium capacity success, and they have a song on the latest Twilight soundtrack, arguably the most sought after music marketing win-fall of the sumer. And they did it on their own.

Metric will bring the rock to New York City today, Thursday 5th August, performing at 9pm as part of Celebrate Brooklyn in the Prospect Park Bandshell. Try and be there!
