“The core of the hip hop sound is sampling. Even that has evolved a lot throughout the years to where it’s no longer just simple loops, it’s what we call ‘choppin!’ And I love choppin’! In fact, I consider my self the ‘master chopper of all time!’”
A bold statement made by Philly producer, Small Professor off his track “Pear Razor” which you can find on his upcoming album, Gigantic Vol. 1. Selecting a name which carries on that of a legend in the game in the Large Professor is nothing short of a gutsy move. It means that you acknowledge all the weight that the name carries and also that you must bring something unique to hip hop’s platform.
“Gigantic Vol. 1” is SP’s debut compilation album and serves as the successor to the Prof’s instrumental mixtape, efficiently entitled “Gigantic Vol. 0.”
Vol.1 is exactly what Small Pro warned us it would be - an eclectic assembly of slick rhymes, courtesy of some the underground’s top notch heroes in Guilty Simpson and Von Pea, over beats and samples all chopped and served to your liking. Nothing fancy, Small Pro delivers the essential sounds that built the core of our beloved genre.
Stand out tracks on the album include “Pea Gets off” which features Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, “Barefoot Gorilla Baboon Funk,” and “Spare Razor” which is graced by the presence of Guilty Simpson and Reef The Lost Cauze.
“Stand up…stretch for the stars and get somebody involved right next to ya” - an extremely relevant Black Thought sample used by Small Pro in Vol. 1’s opening track, “Cometh” which basically means…if you love real hip hop then preach the message of Gigantic on to your comrades!
Forget living your days in the slow lane by playing life by year. Rise up, smack life across the head and listen to better music! Play it by ear!
